Today's post will again be dedicated to my favorite city - Kyiv💛 Or to be more precise - to its pearl - Andriyskyi Uzvoz, located in Podil.

Сьогоднішній пост буде знову присвячений моєму улюбленому місту - Києву💛 А якщо бути точніше - його перлині - Андріїському Узвозу, що на Подолі.

I once mentioned Andriyivskyi Uzviz in one of the posts, but today I want to talk about it in more detail.
Andriivskyi Uzviz is the name of a street in Podil, in the historical district of the city. It is named after the beautiful St. Andrew's Church, which stands on the highest hill in the area. In general, the whole of Kyiv is continuous ups and downs, and Uzviz is the best example of that, because it is laid under a noticeable slope.

Колись я згадувала Андріївський Узвіз у одному з постів, але сьогодні хочу більш детально про нього поговорити.
Андріївський Узвіз - це назва вулиці на Подолі, в історичному районі міста. Названа вона на цесть прекрасної Андріївської церкви, яка стоїть на найвищому пагорбі цього району. Загалом, увесь Київ - це суцільні підйоми та спуски, і Узвіз - найкращий тому приклад, адже він прокладений під відчутним нахилом.

In fact, the street has completely preserved its historical appearance, if you do not count the cobblestones, which were recently replaced with a modern one. The houses here are those that were in the 19th and early 20th centuries.

Вулиця фактично повністю зберегла свій історичний вигляд, якщо не рахувати кам'янку, яку не так давно замінили на сучасну. Будинки ж тут ті, що були у 19- початку 20 столітті.

We were told about their Ukrainian culture that Andriiivskyi Uzviz was also called the Ukrainian Montmartre. Similar to the Paris district, here Ukrainian artists exhibited and sold their works. Various galleries, salons and other cultural institutions were also concentrated here. Now there is a theater ("Podil Theater"), Bulgakov's house-museum, as well as a museum dedicated to the street ("Museum of One Street"), which, by the way, I have not yet been to. But before the street became a cultural haven of the intelligentsia, it had a somewhat different glory. The fact is that there was the largest concentration of public houses in the city. Even after St. Andrew's Church was built. They say that it was the priests who tried for a long time to close the brothels, because it is not worthy for such places to be located next to the holy place. It seems to me that this is a rather interesting historical moment. As we can see, the churchmen got their way, and the street was reclassified. In general, it is a beautiful cultural center of the city in the past, and a tourist attraction in the present.

На парах іх української культури нам розповідали, що Андріївський Узвіз ще називали українським Монтмартром. Подібно до паризького району, тут українські митці виставляли та продавали свої роботи. Також тут зосереджувалися різні галереї, салони та інші культурні установи. Зараз же тут розміщений театр ("Театр на Подолі"), дім-музей Булгакова, а також музей, присвячений вулиці ("Музей однієї вулиці"), в якому я, до речі, ще й досі не була. Але до того як вулиця стала культурним пристанищем інтелегенції, вона носила дещо іншу славу. Справа в тому, що тут була найбільша концентрація публнічних будинків у місті. Навіть після того, як побудували Андріїську церкву. Говорять, що це священники дуже довго добивалися того, щоб борделі позакривали, адже негідно, щоб такі місця знаходились поруч із святим місцем. Мені здається, це доволі цікавий історичих момент. Як можемо побачити, церковники добилися свого, і вулиця перекваліфікувалась. Загалом, це прекрасний культурний осередок міста в минулому, і туристично приваблий у сучасності.

Going up from Kontraktova Square, which is located below, to St. Andrew's Church, you can meet a beautiful majestic structure that looks like a castle. Built in the neo-Gothic style, the house immediately catches the eye. The pointed roof and openwork stucco on the walls conjure up fairy tales in the imagination. By the way, it is precisely because of such feelings that the building is called Richard's Castle (as in Walter Scott's work "Ivanhoe").

Підіймаючись від Контрактової площі, яка знаходиться нижче, до Андріївськоїї церкви, можна зустріти прекрасну величну споруду, яка схожа на замок. Побудований у неоготичному стилі, будинок одразу приковує до себе погляди. Стрільчастий дах та ажурна ліпнина на стінах навіюють в уяві казкові сюжети. До речі, саме через такі відчуття споруду називають замком Річарда (Як у творі Вальтера Скотта "Айвенго").

This building is also attributed a mystical meaning, because everyone who lived here heard strange, eerie sounds like whistling and howling. It was said that ghosts live in the estate. But the whole mystery consisted in the fact that the builders decided to do damage and make fun of the first owner, and placed bottle necks between the walls, and stuffed some other objects into the chimney, or they whistled when the wind got into them. This is such a prank, as they say now. This story was told to me by a local friend who knows the city much better than I do. Also, you can listen to stories about individual historical houses of Kyiv by taking tours.

Цієй споруді також приписують містичне значення, адже всі, хто тут жив, чули дивні, моторшні звуки по типу свистіння та завивання. Говорили, що у маєтку живуть привиди. Та вся містика полягала у тому, що будівники вирішили зробити шкоду та познущатися з першого власника, і повставляли між стінами горлишки з пляшок, а в димохід позапихали ще якісь предмети, або ті, коли в них потрапляв вітер, свистіли. Ось такий пранк, як зараз говорять. Цю історію мені розповідала місцева подруга, яка знає місто набагато краще ніж я. Також історії про окремі історичні будинки Києва можна послухати, взявши, екскурсії.

This is the view from above if you take the spiral staircase to Mount Uzdyhalnytsia. Here you can see the entire Andriiivskyi Uzviz and Kyiv as a whole.

Ось такий вигляд зверху відкривається, якщо підняти гвинтовими сходами на гору Уздихальницю. Тут відкривається вид на весь Андріївський Узвіз та Київ в цілому.

Now that the trees have shed their leaves, it's not so nice here. Nevertheless, you can admire the beautiful architecture of Podol.
It is also worth noting that there are quite a lot of different sellers of rare items (records, posters, postcards, etc.) and goods related to Ukrainian national culture at Andriysky Uzvoza. Therefore, you can "hang" here for a long time.

Зараз, коли дерева вже скинули листя, тут вже не так гарно. Та все ж, можна полюбуватися на гарну ахітектуру Подола.
Також варто зазначити, що на Андріїському узвозі досить багато різних продавців раритетних речей (пластинок, плакатів, листівок і т.д.), товарів, пов'язаних з українською національною культурою. Тому, "зависнути" тут можна надовго.

When visiting the capital of Ukraine, it is worth visiting Andriyivskyi Uzvoz, because it is worth it. This is a place with unique aesthetics, truly Kyiv aesthetics.
