My experience on the last watch: If it starts well, it ends well. (Eng/Esp)

Hello and welcome 👋✨ I want to tell you about my last watch experience. It started as an ordinary work day, arriving over the line to receive the shift, with everything ready to go, that day I had one of my favorite groups this year to work with, so let's get to work! We checked the anesthesia machines, but like any electronic equipment, it can fail at any time and Murphy's law did not take long to make itself felt. We were left with only one operating room available and we had 5 patients requested? Aha and now? No way, we had to start at half machine! But first, the R1 on call who was just joining us, gave us lollipops and we were sweeter than usual 🤣...!

No matter, we received the rest of the guard and began to organize ourselves, electromedicine arrived and disassembled the machine that was failing and got down to work, while we started the task with the only emergency ward we had available, it was a pressure but we could not let the work accumulate, because time is money in the case of some patients. We were able to solve the problem and by the middle of the afternoon electromedicine had repaired the machine, so now we had two operating rooms, but there were more patients because the emergencies did not take long to arrive. The pregnant women made their presence felt that day with their emergency caesarean sections and we were active giving our best!

The day was going by and we were upset, coincidentally one of the patients was a relative of a specialist who was our boss and she gave us ice cream 🥳 there was a mishap with that patient, but finally everything was solved and the Dr was grateful and we were embarrassed 🙈

Then everything went smoother, we were able to do more procedures, help pregnant patients manage their postoperative pain better with an epidural catheter that R1 put in that day, her first time by the way. The greatest satisfaction is to be able to do what we like and enjoy the process and the result, behind a happy patient, there is an anesthesiologist! The next day a colleague asked me to collaborate for an analgesic procedure in a girl, I accompanied her and I felt very happy to be part of that moment, to know that somehow I gave her the push she needed to encourage her to try to do what she had not been able to do before, everything went excellent and the result was a girl who left the operating room without crying 😍 and we were happy!!!!

I went with my chief resident and friend to give sedation in elective surgeries and I had a different and pleasant time despite being in postguard, and that's how we closed a shift with a flourish, in short, a good guard is made by people, no matter the inconveniences, the important thing is to always keep the best attitude!

I'm always thankful for everything that happens, the bad leaves traces of learning and the good helps us to move forward! 🤗

Empezó como un día común de trabajo, llegando sobre la raya a recibir el turno, con todo listo para empezar, ese día tenía uno de mis grupos favoritos de este año para trabajar, entonces manos a la obra! revisamos las máquinas de anestesia, pero como todo equipo electrónico, puede fallar en cualquier momento y la ley de Murphy no tardó en hacerse notar. Nos quedamos con un solo quirófano disponible y teníamos solicitados 5 pacientes... Ajá y ahora? Ni modo, nos todo empezar a media máquina! Pero antes, la R1 de guardia que recién se incorporaba, nos regaló chupetas y estábamos más dulces de lo normal 🤣

No importa, recibimos el resto de la guardia y empezamos a organizarnos, llegó electromedicina y desarmo la máquina que estaba fallando y se puso manos a la obra, mientras nosotros empezamos la faena con el único pabellón de emergencia que teníamos disponible, fue una presión pero no podíamos dejar acumular el trabajo, pues el tiempo es oro en el caso de algunos pacientes. Se pudo ir resolviendo y para la mitad de la tarde ya electromedicina había reparado la máquina, así que ahora teníamos dos quirófanos, pero, habían más pacientes pues las emergencias no tardaron en llegar. Las embarazadas se hicieron sentir ese día con sus cesáreas de emergencia y nosotros activos dando lo mejor!

Fue pasando el día y estábamos molidos, casualmente uno de los pacientes era familiar de una especialista jefa de nosotros y nos regaló helados 🥳 hubo un percance con ese paciente, pero finalmente todo se resolvió y la Dra se sintió agradecida y nosotros con vergüenza 🙈

Luego quedó todo más suave, pudimos hacer más procedimientos, ayudar a las pacientes embarazadas a manejar mejor su dolor postoperatorio con un catéter peridural que puso la R1 de ese día, su primera vez por cierto. La mayor satisfacción es poder hacer lo que nos gusta y disfrutar el proceso y el resultado, detrás de una paciente feliz, está un anestesiólogo! Al día siguiente una compañera me pidió colaboración para un procedimiento analgésico en una niña, la acompañe y me sentí muy dichosa de ser parte de ese momento, de saber que de algún modo le di el empujón que necesitaba para animarse a intentar hacer aquello que no había podido antes, todo salió excelente y el resultado fue una niña que salió de quirófano sin llorar 😍 y nosotras felices!!!

Me fui con mi jefe de residentes y amigo a dar sedaciones en cirugías de electivas y pase un rato diferente y agradable a pesar de estar de postguardia, y es así como cerramos un turno con broche de oro, en definitiva, una buena guardia la hacen las personas, no importa los inconvenientes, lo importante es conservar siempre la mejor actitud!
