Summer Visit to the Medieval Village of San Gimignano, Siena - Discovering Italy with alequandro!

Last summer I was in Tuscany visiting Pisa and then I decided to spend a day in San Gimignano, a charming medieval town in Tuscany, famous for its suggestive towers and its artistic heritage. I had heard about its beauties, but nothing had prepared me for the enchantment I would experience.

La scorsa estate mi trovavo in Toscana a visitare Pisa successivamente ho deciso di trascorrere una giornata a San Gimignano, affascinante cittadina medievale in Toscana, famosa per le sue torri suggestive e il suo patrimonio artistico. Avevo sentito parlare delle sue bellezze, ma nulla mi aveva preparato all'incanto che avrei vissuto.

Arriving early in the morning, I immediately breathed in the unique atmosphere that permeates the narrow cobbled streets of San Gimignano. The towers stood out against the blue sky and the already hot sun promised a splendid day. My first thought was to head towards the main square, Piazza del Duomo, where I would begin my artistic adventure.

Arrivando al mattino presto, ho subito respirato l'atmosfera unica che permea le strette strade lastricate di San Gimignano. Le torri si stagliavano contro il cielo azzurro e il sole già caldo prometteva una giornata splendida. Il mio primo pensiero è stato di dirigermi verso la piazza principale, Piazza del Duomo, dove avrei iniziato la mia avventura artistica.

The beauty of this village is that the architecture has maintained the medieval layout and therefore you have the sensation of experiencing San Gimignano as it was seen centuries ago.

The red color of the clay is predominant and characterizes all the surfaces that meet my gaze.

San Gimignano is also famous for its towers which are 14, think that it originally had 72!

After visiting the majestic Cathedral of San Gimignano, I immersed myself in the artistic treasures of the local museums.

One of these museums, in particular, caught my attention with its collection of precious works of art.

Among all, one canvas particularly fascinated me: the painting by Bernardino di Betto, known as Pinturicchio, entitled "The Virgin of the Assumption between Saints Gregory the Great and Benedict".

Tra tutte, una tela mi ha affascinato in modo particolare: il dipinto di Bernardino di Betto, noto come il Pinturicchio, intitolato "La Vergine Assunta tra i Santi Gregorio Magno e Benedetto".

The painting depicted the Virgin Mary who, surrounded by a halo of light, was assumed into heaven. To her right and left, Saints Gregory the Great and Benedict seemed to contemplate her miracle with reverence. The vibrant colors and mastery of facial expression conveyed a feeling of sacredness and divinity. The golden details of the saints' robes and the skilful use of light created a mystical and evocative atmosphere.

Il dipinto raffigurava la Vergine Maria che, circondata da un'aureola di luce, veniva assunta in cielo. A destra e a sinistra di lei, i Santi Gregorio Magno e Benedetto sembravano contemplare il miracolo con riverenza. I colori vibranti e la maestria nell'espressione dei volti trasmettevano una sensazione di sacralità e divinità. Gli aurei dettagli delle vesti dei santi e l'uso sapiente della luce creavano un'atmosfera mistica e suggestiva.

I paused for a long time in front of this masterpiece, admiring the intricate details and trying to capture the spiritual essence it exuded.

Then I decided to take the stairs and climb a tower to admire the surrounding landscape...

Mi sono soffermato a lungo davanti a questo capolavoro, ammirando i dettagli intricati e cercando di catturare l'essenza spirituale che emanava.

Poi ho deciso di prendere le scale e salire su una torre per ammirare il paesaggio circostante...

A breathtaking spectacle that extended 360 degrees over the sinuous landscape typical of Tuscany.

Uno spettacolo mozzafiato che si estendeva a 360 gradi sul paesaggio sinuoso tipico della Toscana.

After leaving the museum, I decided to explore the city further, walking through its picturesque streets. I stopped in a welcoming trattoria where I enjoyed a traditional Tuscan lunch, with delicious dishes and local wine which made the experience even more unforgettable.

Dopo aver lasciato il museo, ho deciso di esplorare ulteriormente la città, passeggiando tra le sue stradine pittoresche. Ho fatto una sosta in un'accogliente trattoria dove ho gustato un pranzo tradizionale toscano, con piatti deliziosi e vino locale che ha reso l'esperienza ancora più indimenticabile.

The day was spent among art, history and good food, creating memories that I will carry with me forever. San Gimignano, with its imposing towers and extraordinary works of art, has proven to be a destination that goes far beyond expectations. A journey that nourished my soul and enriched my love for the beauty of Italy.
