Citânia de Sanfins - Paços de Ferreira | Portugal

Hello everybody :)

Today i share another visit to one of those places full of history and also full of stones :)
Soon, judging by the type of content, you'll end up thinking that i have some kind of obsession with stones :P
The weather here has not been famous, with a lot of rain accompanied by a lot of wind, but last weekend i took advantage of the fact that the weather was pleasant, despite being a little cool, and i went to visit a place that had been on the agenda of places to visit for a long time.
It ends up being a little strange that it took me so long to get there since it's relatively close to where i live.

But this time i didn't postpone the visit and ended up hitting the road, without forgetting my camera and drone :)
There, the ancestral legacy of the Sanfins hillforts awaited my visit.
This place was once the majestic capital of the Galicians, standing tall since 136 BC with pride and grandeur. Beneath its ancient walls, the Brácaro people, whose name echoes through the centuries in the surrounding lands, wove their lives in harmony with the earth and the heavens.

The city's foundation dates back to the 5th century BC, when it stood like a majestic fortress on the top of the mountain, offering views that, even today, never cease to impress. From the main walls and looking at the horizon, i can imagine the days when this city resisted the attacks of the Roman legions.

History narrates epic conflicts in this place, such as the siege led by Junius Brutus that lasted from 138 BC to 136 BC, ending with the subjugation of the Galician people, and it is still possible to identify Roman buildings from where authority was exercised in the territory, consequence of the occupation.
Many years passed from the height of its occupation until its decline and abandonment.

The first excavations date back to the end of the 19th century, with successive exploration and excavation campaigns taking place that highlighted the importance of this site, with the last exploration being in 2010.
Of course, much remains to be discovered, even with the entire wall outlined, more evidence of occupation was found throughout the surrounding area.
The access path we followed is not the original.

The old path surrounded the outer perimeter of the walls up to the main door, and it is still possible to see a few meters that we can walk.
The extent of the entire enclosure is impressive, not only for its dimensions, but also for the density of occupation, with hundreds of circular, square and even rectangular shaped houses, all of them arranged in a well-organized structure.
I don't know if the environment is always like the one i found, but i found myself wandering the narrow alleys practically alone.
While i was there, i crossed paths with a runner who crossed one of the paths towards a nearby trail, followed by a dog, crossed paths with a man who was alone making some recordings with a drone and another couple who went in to visit one of the places and left again.

The silence in a place like that is quite welcoming and relaxing, but as i look around, i try to imagine what the environment and sounds would have been like during its occupation 2000 years ago.
Between the 2nd and 1st centuries BC, around 3000 people are said to have lived there at the same time.
Almost all of the current housing dates back to Roman times, with emphasis on two large square-plan buildings and round-plan housing units with a vegetable roof that was restored after a tragic fire.

After spending a good amount of time there exploring the terrain and even after launching the Drone to view the entire area from an aerial perspective, i ended up concluding that i missed seeing the sauna which is located on a lower level outside the enclosure wall. .
From the door, we can follow a steep path made of bedrock that leads to the Castro sauna located next to a spring that still flows.
The same thing happened in Citânia de Briteiros, i failed to see the sauna!
In the meantime, i intend to organize a new visit and this time take some friends to enjoy this experience, and hope this time i can go down the hill and see the Sauna with my own eyes :)

That´s all for today, Hope you like it :)

The natural scenery in that place is very beautiful, the walls with stones are arranged neatly and still look sturdy, making the combination of natural scenery there very beautiful, especially there is green grass growing there, and the most amazing thing about your post is, you took the photo using Droeneh, Wow, this is really a spectacular view, I really want to have a Drone someday
