Yo me pregunto...

Saludos 🤗

! [ENGLISH VERSION]

My participation in the Observe, Think, Write contest: Tomato at almost free price

InShot_20230602_211052094.jpg

When I look at those rich tomatoes 🍅 I start thinking about the laborious work that the producer of the field has to offer us this precious food.

It is those blessed hands that day by day with their effort and hard work till the soil and tend their plants so that we can bring to our tables this rich vegetable.

However, they do not always get a good payment for their crops and many times they have to lower their price to the wholesaler in order to make a little profit or to recover their investment.

This year the tomato growers of San Fernando de Apure, Venezuela, had such an abundant production that on the one hand it was a blessing to be able to access the product at super cheap prices; but on the other hand they had to offer it at up to $2.5 per basket. I ask myself... Who benefited there?...

Obviously the producer was not the one who benefited the most, I think that the winner was the reseller. I got to buy 01 Kg of tomato at 5 Bs, which is approximately 0.20 $. Draw your own conclusions.

This harvest time is the most appropriate to prepare sauces and vacuum pack them so we can keep them for a long time because the rest of the year the price of tomatoes rises considerably as they are not produced in the region.

I particularly love to prepare pizza sauces and I also use to eat them with salads and even as a second filling for arepas, it is exquisite.

I wish there were social programs to support rural producers that would help them to sell their crops in other cities so that they can obtain better profits.

This is my weekly participation in the Observe, Think, Write Contest from 27-05-2023 to 02/06/2023 you can join this group of creative writers and participate in the weekly challenges of the community. Greetings 🤗

In my country, resellers have been cut out of the picture. At the farmers market sellers has to be authorized and you can only get authorization, if you have land, which proves you're the farmer. The other way is to have a company, with all the authorizations.

I wish this law would be implemented in more countries as farmers are very often ripped off and get very little for their products.

Hi @erikah you are right, the producers are the most exploited, it is difficult for them to take the products from the countryside to the city, that is why the resellers come to their sectors and buy the product to resell it. Something similar happened a few days ago with cheese, but they agreed on a minimum selling price standard for distributors. It is necessary for countries to create regulations in this regard.
