My garden attracts many animals that seek its freshness, they are very funny but they can unintentionally spoil it. That's why I try to protect my plants so that these naughty visitors can't mistreat them.

I am referring to some felines and dogs that roam around my garden, they are my neighbors' pets, 😸🐕 they are always hanging around my house trying to evade the strong heat and also to take their naps.

It is common to see them roaming around the garden, lying among the plants or hunting some lizard, butterfly or little bird they can find. But the part that plants don't like is when they urinate on them and this makes their leaves burn, their urine is very strong, that's why some of them don't resist and perish.

I have a very leafy oregano which I always use for my meals, I try to keep it always beautiful and ready to harvest. But I realized that cats love to turn around and squirt their urine on it, the same happens with dogs. So I thought I should protect it as this plant is very delicate.

I tried placing several barriers to keep the cats away but they didn't work for me as they always managed to sneak in, so I thought I would try planting a lemon balm plant (Melissa officinalis) right in front of the oregano and this has worked for me.

The lemon balm grew quite bushy and I always have to prune it, but I try to have some branches sticking out around the oregano plant, so that if one of these animals urinates on it, only the leaves of the lemon balm are affected. This natural barrier has worked for me and allows me to have my plant always with its beautiful foliage.

Just as some insects fulfill an environmental micro-control function, plants can also help us in the task of protecting our garden.

Una barrera para el orégano

El amor por el jardín nos lleva a estar en continuo movimiento para que las plantas estén en las mejores condiciones. Pero sabemos que es una ardua tarea ya que nos podemos encontrar con ciertos visitantes que puedan dañarlas.

Mi jardín atrae muchos animales que buscan su frescor, estos son muy divertidos pero sin querer pueden llegar a estropearlo. Por eso trato de proteger mis plantas para que estos traviesos visitantes no puedan maltratarlas.

Me refiero a algunos felinos y perros que se pasean por mi jardín, son las mascotas de mis vecinos, 😸🐕 ellos siempre andan merodeando por mi casa tratando de evadir el fuerte calor y también para echar sus siestas.

Es frecuente verlos rondando el jardín, acostados entre las plantas o cazando alguna lagartija, mariposa o pajarillo que puedan encontrar. Pero la parte que no les gusta a las plantas es cuando ellos las orinan y esto hace que sus hojas se quemen, su orín es muy fuerte, por eso algunas no resisten y perecen.

Yo tengo un orégano muy frondoso el cual siempre aprovecho para mis comidas, trato de que se mantenga siempre hermoso y que esté apto para cosechar. Pero me di cuenta que a los gatos les encanta dar media vuelta y lanzarles el chorro de su orin, igual pasa con los perros. Entonces pensé que debía protegerlo ya que está planta es muy delicada.

Intenté colocando varias barreras que mantuvieran alejados a los gatos pero no me funcionaron ya que siempre lograban colarse, así que se me ocurrió probar sembrando una planta de toronjil (Melissa officinalis) justo delante del orégano y esto me ha funcionado.

El toronjil creció bastante frondoso y siempre tengo que podarlo, pero trato de que algunas ramas sobresalgan alrededor de la planta de orégano, de manera que si uno de estos animales la orinan solo se afecte las hojas del toronjil. Esta barrera natural si me ha funcionado y me permite tener mi planta siempre con su follaje hermoso.

Así como algunos insectos cumplen una función microcontroladora ambiental, también las plantas pueden ayudarnos en la tarea de proteger nuestro jardín.
