Esta es mi participación en el concurso Multitopics. El tema de esta semana son los paisajes rurales. En la foto quise capturar algunos de los símbolos de los paisajes rurales de la región de Buenos Aires en la que vivo, aunque supongo que en todas partes sucede más o menos lo mismo.

This is my entry in the Multitopics contest. This week's theme is rural landscapes. In the photo I wanted to capture some of the symbols of the rural landscapes of the region of Buenos Aires where I live, although I guess it is more or less the same everywhere.

Uno de esos símbolos son los alambrados que separan un campo de otro. Los paisajes rurales tienen una belleza evidente, natural, ordenada. Sin embargo, esos alambrados esconden historias de matanzas de pobladores originarios, de plantas y animales en peligro de extinción. El paisaje rural está formado por grandes campos, generalmente con monocultivos, muy hermosos a la vista, pero muy perjudiciales para el suelo y rociados con grandes cantidades de veneno. A los costados de los alambrados, otro símbolo, lo poco que queda de los pastizales originarios, luchando por sobrevivir. Ahí es donde se encuentra la verdadera belleza del campo, a los costados del camino, en los lugares donde no llegan los tractores, en las márgenes de los arroyos. Plantas maravillosas y olvidadas, madrigueras de animales salvajes, insectos que resisten en esos pequeños oasis los efectos de los plaguicidas.

One of those symbols are the wire fences that separate one field from another. Rural landscapes have an obvious, natural, orderly beauty. However, these fences hide stories of the slaughter of native inhabitants, of plants and animals in danger of extinction. The rural landscape is made up of large fields, generally with monocultures, very beautiful to look at, but very harmful to the soil and sprayed with large amounts of poison. On the sides of the fences, another symbol, the little that remains of the original pastures, struggling to survive. That is where the true beauty of the countryside is found, on the sides of the road, in places where tractors do not reach, on the banks of the streams. Wonderful and forgotten plants, wild animal burrows, insects that resist the effects of pesticides in those small oases.

Ese contraste quería mostrar en la foto: por un lado, la belleza ordenada y prolija de los cultivos, como una máscara; y, por el otro, la belleza salvaje de la naturaleza, que resiste como puede en los límites.

That contrast I wanted to show in the photo: on the one hand, the orderly and neat beauty of the crops, like a mask; and, on the other hand, the wild beauty of nature, which resists as best it can in the limits.
