Today is Friday, July 3, and, fortunately, the strong aftershocks have stopped. I hope the earth returns to normal. Many lives and much infrastructure have been lost in Venezuela; many people have lost their loved ones and their homes. I’ve been watching a lot of news reports and stories about survivors rescued after the powerful double earthquake, and I can’t help but say that God protects us. A catastrophe of this nature—one that has been so destructive—leaves us thinking deeply about how precious our lives are.

However, I know I have to carry on with my normal activities so as not to sink into sadness, let alone depression. The events unfolding around us are truly heartbreaking, and nothing we’ve experienced before comes close to this. So, in search of a breather and a way to keep my mind active, I turned to my passion for soccer to watch a thrilling FIFA World Cup match that reminded us that, right up until the last second of the game, there’s always hope: the clash between Portugal and Croatia.

Tension and Drama at Toronto Stadium

The match, played in a packed Toronto Stadium, was a true clash of titans. Croatia took the field with the tactical discipline and experience that characterize them in international competitions, making life very difficult for the Portuguese team in the first half.

Hoy es viernes 3 de julio y, afortunadamente, han cesado las réplicas fuertes. Espero que la tierra vuelva a la normalidad. Se han perdido muchas vidas e infraestructuras en Venezuela; muchas personas quedaron sin sus familiares y sin su hogar. He estado viendo muchas noticias e historias de los sobrevivientes rescatados después del fuerte doble sismo, y no puedo dejar de decir que Dios nos protege. Una catástrofe de esta naturaleza, que ha sido tan destructiva, nos deja pensando profundamente en lo valiosa que es nuestra vida.

Sin embargo, sé que tengo que seguir con mis actividades normales para no sumirse en la tristeza y menos en una depresión. Los sucesos que nos rodean son definitivamente desgarradores y esto no tiene comparación con algo que hayamos vivido antes. Por eso, buscando un espacio para respirar y mantener la mente activa, me refugié en la pasión del fútbol para presenciar un partidazo de la Copa Mundial de la FIFA que nos recordó que, hasta el último segundo del partido, siempre hay esperanza: el choque entre Portugal y Croacia.

Tensión y drama en el Estadio de Toronto

El encuentro, disputado en un abarrotado Estadio de Toronto, fue una auténtica batalla de titanes. Croacia saltó a la cancha con ese orden táctico y esa veteranía que los caracteriza en las citas internacionales, haciendo la vida muy difícil al conjunto luso en la primera mitad.
