Keeping a Cool Head Amid the Tragedy in Venezuela and the Thrilling World Cup Match Between Argentina and Cape Verde (English/Spanish)

Today is July 4, and it has been 10 days since the twin earthquakes struck Venezuela. We haven’t felt any more aftershocks for several days now, and, thank God, the ground has felt more stable. Keeping a cool head, this has been one of the most devastating and dangerous moments the country has ever faced; when the forces of nature manifest themselves like this, we must treat them with the utmost respect. There are conspiracy theories and doubts suggesting that the earthquake may have been artificially triggered; in this world, we must not rule anything out, especially given the technological advances that have been made across the globe.

But I admire, respect, and send my deepest support to the people who lost family members in this tragedy, because they will have to face a pain and a void that they can only overcome—with the right tools and support—in order to survive this devastating blow that life has dealt them. I thank God, as I’ve said many times, for keeping my family and me safe, but I can’t help but think of others who are going through a situation as difficult and complicated as this one.

To clear my mind a bit, I watched the match between Argentina and Cape Verde, and it was the best game I’ve enjoyed so far in the World Cup.

The Thrilling Match That Brought Miami to a Standstill

The match, played at the imposing Miami Stadium, was a true whirlwind of emotions—the perfect outlet I needed to release tension. On paper, many expected the Albiceleste to dominate completely, but soccer treated us to a movie-worthy script in which the modesty and courage of the African “Blue Sharks” made life difficult for the world champions.

The scoring was opened by the usual suspect: Lionel Messi struck in the 29th minute to make it 1-0 for Argentina, sparking a celebration in the stands. However, Cape Verde didn’t back down and, playing with tremendous discipline and character, tied the game in the 59th minute through Deroy Duarte. The 1-1 tie held firm until the final whistle, forcing a wild extra time.

Drama, ties, and a nail-biting finish in extra time

Extra time was a heart-stopping roller coaster ride not for the faint of heart. Just as the first half of extra time began, in the 92nd minute, defender Lisandro Martínez capitalized on a loose ball in the box to restore Argentina’s lead at 2-1. It seemed as though things were settling down, but Cape Verde showed admirable resilience, and in the 103rd minute, Sidny Lopes Cabral sent the ball into the back of the net for a historic and unthinkable 2-2 tie.

The specter of a penalty shootout was already hanging over the entire Miami stadium. Nerves were on edge on both benches until luck and Argentina’s pressure played their part: in the 111th minute, in a desperate attempt to clear a dangerous cross, Cape Verdean defender Diney Borges ended up scoring an own goal (o.g.). That own goal sealed the final 3-2 victory for Argentina, which had been counting down the minutes against the most worthy and surprising opponent of the tournament so far.

Soccer as a Necessary Outlet

Watching these athletes give it their all on the field, battling inch by inch until the 120th minute, reconnected me with pure emotion. Soccer doesn’t solve real-world problems or erase the pain of those suffering in my country today, but how necessary it is to have these ninety (or one hundred twenty) minutes of escape to keep us afloat, take our minds off things, and recharge our energy to keep moving forward.

Mente fría ante la tragedia en Venezuela y la electrizante batalla mundialista entre Argentina y Cabo Verde

Hoy es 4 de julio y van 10 días desde que ocurrió el doble terremoto en Venezuela. No hemos percibido más réplicas desde hace varios días y, gracias a Dios, la tierra se ha notado más estable. Con la mente fría, este ha sido uno de los momentos más devastadores y peligrosos que ha enfrentado el país; si esta fuerza de la naturaleza se manifiesta así, hay que guardarle mucho respeto. Hay teorías conspirativas y dudas que dicen que el terremoto pudo haber sido provocado de forma artificial; en este mundo no hay que descartar nada y más con los avances tecnológicos que se han logrado en el planeta.

Pero admiro, respeto y le envío mucha fuerza a la gente que perdió a su familia en esta tragedia, porque tendrán que enfrentar un dolor y un vacío que solo con las herramientas adecuadas e indicadas podrán sobrellevar para poder sobrevivir a este golpe tan letal que les ha dado la vida. Le doy gracias a Dios, como lo he dicho muchas veces, por mantener a salvo a mi familia y a mi persona, pero no puedo dejar de pensar en los demás que están pasando por una situación tan difícil y complicada como esta.

Despejando un poco mi mente, observé el partido entre Argentina vs. Cabo Verde y ha sido el mejor juego que he disfrutado hasta los momentos del mundial.

El partidazo que paralizó a Miami

El choque, disputado en el imponente Estadio de Miami, fue un auténtico torbellino de emociones, el cable a tierra perfecto que necesitaba para liberar tensiones. En los papeles, muchos esperaban un dominio absoluto de la albiceleste, pero el fútbol nos regaló un guión de película donde la modestia y la valentía de los "Tiburones Azules" africanos pusieron a sufrir a los campeones del mundo.

La pizarra la abrió el de siempre: Lionel Messi frotó la lámpara al minuto 29 para poner el 1-0 a favor de Argentina, desatando la fiesta en las tribunas. Sin embargo, Cabo Verde no se amilanó y, plantándose con muchísimo orden y carácter, logró el empate al minuto 59 por medio de Deroy Duarte. El 1-1 se mantuvo inamovible hasta el pitazo final, obligando a jugar un alargue de pura locura.

Drama, empates y un desenlace agónico en el tiempo extra

La prórroga fue un carrusel de infarto no apto para cardíacos. Apenas arrancando el primer tiempo extra, al minuto 92, el defensor Lisandro Martínez aprovechó un balón en el área para devolverle la ventaja a la Argentina con el 2-1. Parecía que las aguas se calmaban, pero Cabo Verde demostró una resiliencia admirable y al minuto 103, Sidny Lopes Cabral mandó la pelota al fondo de la red para un histórico e impensable 2-2.

El fantasma de los penales ya recorría todo el estadio de Miami. Los nervios estaban de punta en ambas bancas hasta que la fortuna y la presión argentina jugaron su papel: al minuto 111, en un intento desesperado por despejar un centro peligroso, el defensor caboverdiano Diney Borges terminó marcando en propia puerta (p.p.). Ese autogol selló el definitivo 3-2 a favor de una Argentina que terminó pidiendo la hora ante el rival más digno y sorprendente de lo que va de torneo.

El fútbol como desahogo necesario

Ver a estos atletas entregarlo todo en la cancha, batallando palmo a palmo hasta el minuto 120, me hizo conectar de nuevo con la emoción pura. El fútbol no soluciona las realidades ni borra el dolor de quienes hoy sufren en mi país, pero qué necesario es contar con estos noventa (o ciento veinte) minutos de desconexión para mantenernos a flote, distraer la mente y recargar energías para seguir adelante.
