Orwellian Quotes From Southwold Pier

Apparently George Orwell lived in Southwold at least twice during his life; as a teenager and in his thirties. I saw this beautiful mural at the start of the Southwold Pier and was at first impressed by the size one one quote about who controls the past, present and future narrative. I actually had never seen the quote before then, but was immediately taken by it. It was much later when looking through the photos and looked closely at the other quotes that I realised this was a tribute of sorts to George Orwell.

It was the quote from Animal Farm, which actually isn't completely visible from the photo, that made it click. I read the book when I was about eleven years old, as part of English Literature class, but obviously didn't fully understand the deeper meaning back then. I just found talking pigs funny, if anything. That quote stuck with me since then, such that I can reconstruct it from any fragment of it now.

"Perhaps one did not want to be loved so much as to be understood"

"He who controls the past controls the future. He who controls the present controls the past."

"Good writing is like a windowpane."

"Big Brother is watching you."

"Nothing exists except through human consciousness."

"It was a Bright cold day in April and the clocks where striking thirteen."

"George Orwell spent time in Southwold as a teenager + in his thirties next door to the fish+chips shop on the high street"

"All animals are equal, but some are more equal than others."

I've decided to go back and re-read all the George Orwell books I read in the past, as well as anything I haven't read. It's going to take a while since I'm a very slow reader, but I'm not in a hurry. The goal is to enjoy the process and slowly re-discover all the stuff I missed. I already have on my iPhone as an audiobook. I think I'll cheat and start with that one. Then I'll grab a copy of Animal Farm off Amazon.

Peace & Love,

Adé
