I don't mind if you interrupt me... (Eng - Spa)

Children have a peculiar way of interpreting life and expressing it as well. A couple of years ago, one of my daughters told me with that typical innocence and authenticity that children have, something so simple, but so profound and beautiful, that it made me stop and reflect on my own life.

That day, when dinner was ready, my wife called me to the table. As I made my way to the dining room I passed by the girls' room and heard my daughter, who was busy drawing, invite me into the room to keep her company. I explained to her that I couldn't because her mother was waiting for me for dinner. No problem, bring your plate and eat here in my room - she replied. Of course, such an invitation is hard to resist. You should have seen her eyes!

While I picked up my delicious rice dish with my wife's secret recipe stew, my daughter busied herself preparing lovingly her little game table with a very elegant tablecloth for her special guest. When I sat down in the chair she asked me - Do you need anything else? Something to drink? - I replied. So she wrapped a napkin around a small board that served as the base for her doll bed, went to the kitchen, and returned with a glass full of orange juice for me. As she placed the glass on the table, like a good hostess she asked me - Anything else? No, thank you! - I said to her. If you need anything else, please just let me know, okay? - she answered very tenderly. Of course, I will. - I replied. I don't mind if you interrupt me, just let me know, okay? - she insisted.

No, ¡gracias!

When I heard that I almost choked on food. That little phrase surprised me so much that it made me stop for a few minutes and think about it. You may be wondering, what's so special about that sentence? I think a lot. I think this is a clear example of why Jesus tells us to be like children (Mt 18:3). The Word of God calls us to bear one another's burdens (Galatians 6:2), to do good, and serve one another (Galatians 6:10).

The problem is, quite frankly, that I am often not always willing to do that. Sometimes I look for excuses to run away from my responsibilities or I wait until someone else takes the initiative so I can avoid the hassle. At worst I simply ignore the call for help. I have to admit, to my shame, that having to help others at times particularly bothers me because it involves interrupting my plans and making changes to my day's schedule.

That was definitely not what Jesus had in mind for his church. We live in a hurting world and expect the Church to rise up and do its job of healing wounds with God's love. What did God teach me through my daughter? Three things: a) I have to grow up b) I have to make the decision to serve others and c) I need to authentically rejoice in saying I don't mind if you interrupt me! If you need anything, let me know, I am here to serve you.

What a beautiful post @acgalarza! As a mother, I am constantly in awe of the things my children teach me with just the smallest phrase or action! Kids really don't get enough credit for their simple, sweet wisdoms :)

Thank you for sharing this wonderful moment of reflection!

Awww, that's super cute. From the mouth of babes and sucklings...

I can absolutely relate with the way you feel. I deal with that whenever I'm home and have things to do and my parents need me as well.

Thanks for sharing, I'll remember this next time I'm hesitant to help❤

You're very welcome, @juliamulcahy! I know what you mean. I'm still learning about them and there is too much to learn. I decided to go slow, stake them and learn on the go. At the moment I just share as much as I can.

This was so beautiful, my brother! and I can see the type of parents you and your wife are... because it is reflected in the heart of that daughter of yours! hehehehe

I just loved this - my husband asked me last night.. "did you read acgalarza's post?"

we didn't get to talk about it - but .... now I see why he asked. I'm sure he was touched as much as I was! heheheheh

and yes, if we could just be like little children. Children are SUCH a gift and this has been on my heart for weeks now. God has been speaking to me about seeds.... and, hmmm yes - well, as more becomes revealed to me - hehehehe I'll share more. My posts this last week have been a bit on the deep side for a reason. hehehe but I think I'm just being stirred for something important. you can pray for me if you think of it! hehehe <3 but thank you for this post!!

Thank you very much, "Schwester" (Sister in German)! We have really tried but I know how much credit we can take for that! We are proud of her, if I may say so. 🤗

You don't know how much your words mean to me. It's not always easy to share personal experiences but my intention this time was to share a personal reflection in the hope of inspiring others. I am glad that some hearts have been touched somehow by this story.

We learn a lot from children. No wonder, Jesus loves little children a lot and tell us to be like them. I have nieces and nephews that shock me with their action.

We live in a hurting world and expect the Church to rise up and do its job of healing wounds with God's love.

This just summarizes the world we leave in, we as Christians need to know how to give out love and lend helping hands. I must confess it is hard sometimes but if we can consciously make the decision to do so, then we will be able to. You and your wife have done a great job in raising her.

Thank you for this inspiring post

Yes, children are instruments in God's hands. We just need to pay attention. 👍

I must confess it is hard sometimes but if we can consciously make the decision to do so, then we will be able to.

You are right, we just need to make up our minds and get to work! It's not easy but we can do everything in Jesus's name.

You and your wife have done a great job in raising her. Thank you for this inspiring post

We try our best! 😊 I don't know if we raised them or if they raised us! 😜 Thank you for your encouraging words!

You have taught us a lesson on the post and the way you used your daughter to display it is so sweet. She must be a sweet little one. Children are gifts and “living” reminders of innocence and how life should be.
