Crete's capital, Heraklion, is a city of contrasts.

When you think of Greece, you probably picture sunny beaches and ancient ruins. But a visit to Heraklion, Crete's vibrant capital, will show you how this island is also home to modern cities with a rich history of their own.

At first glance, Heraklion may seem like any other urban center—a bustling port city with streets filled with scooters, people rushing from place to place, and restaurants serving up fresh seafood by the sea.
But if you look closer, there are hints of its past:
Venetian & Ottoman fountains bubble up in the shadow of apartment blocks;
the seaside Koules Fortress is still standing guard over ships that have been docking here since Minoan times; and the imposing Venetian walls still stand guard over the city's heart.
