(Esp/Eng) Pequeña colección de insectos // Small collection of insects

Yesterday I took some photographs of various insects living on the same plant, clearly they were all just passing through, but you can often see these species in the area where I live, being these organisms very common but very important for ecosystems. In this sense, this publication will be a small sample of the role that some insects play either in their natural habitats or in places modified by humans.

A small plant can become a perfect place for many living beings to perform their biological and ecological functions, for this reason plant organisms are a key piece not only for obtaining oxygen, but a high number of microorganisms and arthropods need them for energy, as shelter and for ecosystems to continue functioning smoothly. For this reason, I decided to make a small photographic compilation with the purpose of showing some members of the class Insecta and to highlight certain functions that they perform every day and that we usually ignore due to ignorance.

The first specimens I photographed are very active flying life forms, when observed for several minutes it may seem that they do not rest and because of their small size some people consider them as annoying and inferior. However, the reality is very different, since one of the most important functions on planet Earth is performed by winged insects of different species, being in first place those that we commonly know as bees and that belong to the order Hymenoptera. Similarly, in the flowers of the area I could see the predominance of 3 types of insects, one was a dipteran (fly) of the family Syrphidae and the other 2 were hymenoptera (wasps and bees), but due to the activity that characterizes them I could not get good pictures to share in this publication, only one of them stopped long enough to photograph them.

The insect in the photo is a small species of bee known scientifically as Tetragonisca angustula, it is completely harmless to humans and one of the main functions of these small insects is to contribute to pollination. In these photos you can see that in its hind legs it has very wide areas (corbiculae), this is due to a modification that allows the storage of pollen for later transport, so that, as a harmless Tetragonisca angustula moves through different plants this pollen is deposited on other plants of the same species and pollination is generated that will allow obtaining fruits and seeds, which culminates in the subsequent reproduction of plant species, something that is fascinating.

A natural enemy of the small bee shown is the insect in the photo. Probably, the appearance it has is not the most beautiful before our eyes, but the function it performs is a marvel for ecosystems and for agriculture, since this strange specimen is a very sophisticated predator that uses its colors to camouflage itself in the foliage of plants, then without difficulty any other insect becomes a precious source of energy (prey).

This insect is just one of the thousands of species of bedbugs that exist, its scientific name is Zelus renardii and it is also harmless to us. Despite being an insect predator, it can sometimes take advantage of the nectar of a flower to get some energy, even perching on a flower can be very advantageous, because while waiting for the arrival of an insect to the flower to turn it into prey, this assassin bug can subtract liquids rich in sugars to make the wait less boring. This would be like having a drink while waiting for dinner to arrive at the table.

Here is another hemiptera that crossed my path, this one is very similar to the specimen shown in the previous segment, but in reality they are very different species that are only united because both belong to the same suborder (Heteroptera), so there are certain characteristics in common. At the same time, photographs are not always very useful to identify insects, it is always better to make observations while we rely on identification keys, then make comparisons and discard species until we get to the specimen we want to identify. In this case, this bedbug belongs to the family Coreidae and the genus is Zicca, but we could not determine the species only with photographs, it is necessary to place the specimen under the lens of the microscope and compare it with others of the same genus to know the species.

This is a sample of dorsal views of the 2 bugs (Heteroptera) shared in this publication. When observed in this way the morphological differences come to light, the main thing is the shape of the head, the thickness of the body, eyes, coloration and locomotion structures (legs). In the species of the genus Zicca the legs have very thick or modified areas, also the feeding habits or preferences are different in the 2 species that you have seen in this post, since the members of Zicca feed on fluids of plant origin, that is, it sucks liquids from plants by piercing their tissues, while as I had mentioned in other paragraphs, the species Zelus renardii is a predator of other arthropods.

The differences of all the insects shown in this article are very significant, but all are very important for the preservation and maintenance of active ecosystems. Those that feed on plants such as the Zicca sp bedbug can become pests in agriculture or in any place that man has altered for his benefit, this is caused mostly by the disappearance of their natural predators; however, in natural spaces this does not happen because the predator populations are maintained in reasonable numbers and they can fulfill their functions. For this reason, I have always stressed that it is necessary to protect and respect every living being, arthropods have always been subject to attacks for no reason and this can bring consequences in the short or long term, so that the control of these organisms should be done only when it is really necessary and using methods that generate little impact on the environment.
