Les presento a mi amigos Alex. Tanto él como sus compañeros de trabajo han estado a la vanguardia en estos tiempos difíciles que nos ha tocado vivir a causa de la pandemia. Llevan a cabo una labor loable, porque cada día que van a su trabajo corren el riesgo de contagiarse de covid-19, aun así, el temor no los paraliza. Ellos saben que los necesitamos y al ver lo mucho que pueden ayudar, siguen adelante con confianza y optimismo. Alex está trabajando directamente en el área covid-19, pero no siempre fue así. Ya les cuento cómo llego hasta el área más peligrosa que existe en el ámbito de la salud.

This is my friend Alex. He and his co-workers have been at the forefront in these difficult times we are living through because of the pandemic. They do a commendable job, because every day they go to work they run the risk of getting covid-19, yet fear does not paralyze them. They know we need them, and when they see how much they can help, they go forward with confidence and optimism. Alex is working directly in the covid-19 area, but it wasn't always like this. I'll tell you how he got to the most dangerous area in healthcare.

Alex es médico cirujano, le apasiona su carrera. A él le fascina estar en el área de emergencias, porque allí se aprende a trabajar bajo presión, sostiene él. Además le encanta suturar, esa es su especialidad y desea continuar estudiando para llegar a realizar grandes cirugías. Cuando le toca pasar consultas normales no siente mucho agrado, porque lo de él son las emergencias. Sin embargo, cuando le corresponde atender las consultas, lo hace con gozo para cumplir con su trabajo como debe ser y para apegarse al horario que le asignan en el hospital.

Alex is a surgeon and is passionate about his career. He loves being in the emergency area, because there you learn to work under pressure, he says. He also loves suturing, that is his specialty and he wants to continue studying to be able to perform major surgeries. When it's his turn to do normal consultations, he doesn't feel much pleasure, because he's all about emergencies. However, when it is his turn to attend consultations, he does it with joy to do his job as it should be and to stick to the schedule assigned to him at the hospital.

Al ir colapsando los sitios designados para el área covid-19 por el incremento de los casos, solicitaron médicos para colaborar y así prestar su ayuda ante tal situación. Alex no lo pensó, de inmediato se ofreció para trabajar en dicha área. Tanto a mí como a sus familiares no nos pareció su decisión, porque nos daba miedo que pudiera llegarse a contagiar, tal como le había ocurrido a otros médicos. No obstante, Alex lleva en la sangre la disposición de ayudar donde se precise, así que hizo caso omiso a familiares y amigos y se fue a trabajar en el peligroso foco del área covid-19. Demostrando valentía, abnegación y un absoluto compromiso con su trabajo.

As the sites designated for the covid-19 area collapsed due to the increase in the number of cases, doctors were asked to collaborate and help in this situation. Alex did not think twice, he immediately volunteered to work in that area. Both myself and his family did not like his decision, because we were afraid that he could become infected, as had happened to other doctors. However, Alex's willingness to help where needed is in his blood, so he ignored family and friends and went to work in the dangerous outbreak area of covid-19. He showed courage, selflessness and absolute commitment to his work.

Alex lleva más de seis meses trabajando arduamente y afirma que ha aprendido muchísimo al estar directamente relacionado con los pacientes contagiados. También le ha tocado ver como mueren muchos de sus pacientes y esto sin duda alguna marca a cualquier ser humano. Nuestros profesionales de la salud merecen todo nuestro respeto, porque sus emociones son afectadas de forma negativa por todo lo que tienen que ver a diario. Aunque se podría decir que están acostumbrados a ver personas enfermas, recordemos que la pandemia ha cobrado miles de vida a diario y ver esto tan de cerca remueve sentimientos y afecta a cualquiera.

Alex has been working hard for more than six months and says he has learned a great deal from being directly involved with infected patients. He has also seen many of his patients die, and this undoubtedly marks any human being. Our healthcare professionals deserve all our respect, because their emotions are affected in a negative way by everything they have to see on a daily basis. Although it could be said that they are used to seeing sick people, let's remember that the pandemic has claimed thousands of lives every day and seeing this up close stirs feelings and affects anyone.

Cada día para nuestros profesionales de la salud es una oportunidad para contagiarse, pero también para salvar vidas. Por lo tanto debemos agradecer tener médicos altruistas, dispuestos a sacrificarse, a fin de hacer más llevadera la pandemia. Si todos los médicos se quedaran en su casa por temor, estaríamos en un escenario peor, así que valoremos lo que hacen nuestros profesionales de la salud. Con mucha esperanza esperamos el día en que desaparezca la pandemia, mientras tanto, colaboremos con los héroes de esta época, esforzándonos por tomar todas las medidas preventivas.

Every day for our health professionals is an opportunity to become infected, but also to save lives. Therefore we should be grateful to have altruistic physicians, willing to sacrifice themselves, in order to make the pandemic more bearable. If all physicians stayed at home out of fear, we would be in a worse scenario, so let us appreciate what our health professionals do. It is with great hope that we await the day when the pandemic disappears. In the meantime, let us collaborate with the heroes of this era by striving to take all preventive measures.
