Use sunscreen inside the house? || ¿Usar protector solar dentro de la casa?

If you had told me a couple of years ago that you use sunscreen just to stay indoors, without going out, I might have thought that you also go to the beach to polish the sand. But now I understand the issue better since I saw the interview of a dermatologist talking about this topic. Soon after I took action and I want to tell you how it went. Please join me.

I don't remember the name of the doctor interviewed, but it was on a live midday news broadcast on a national TV channel. There she recalled that facial skin is exposed to a lot of light even inside the home, such as the light from the computer monitor, from our cell phones and from light bulbs and lamps, either fluorescent or LED. All this can have an impact on the skin of our face, since it is regular (practically every day) and on a type of skin that is not as deep as those of other parts of the body.

Her recommendation was to use a daily moisturizer with sunscreen, which would not need to be in the high digits. That got me thinking. I told my wife about it and we both agreed that everything the professional said made a lot of sense. In fact, the skin on my face was already turning redder than the rest of my body. Coincidence? So in a few days we visited a place where they sold different products of this kind.

There were two moisturizers there with sunscreen. I chose this one, ZOAH brand, with SPF 15, which was under $5. Its packaging says it protects against UVA and UVB rays. The other one didn't say SPF, so I discarded it. After reading the instructions I started applying it in the mornings.

My skin is white, with many traces of the famous teenage acne and a few bumps and bruises on my forehead. It's an oily skin, and I think that's what I missed about this information in the products I reviewed, since they simply said it was for all skin types. I guess maybe you just want light protection and that's it. Well...

The cream is white and its density is quite thick. How did I do? I gradually regained a less "burnt" tone, and although its packaging says it's anti-aging, that doesn't work, at least with me. Maybe I'm aging faster than the effect of the cream. Still, I didn't buy it for that purpose. Back to the protection issue, I do think it helps me, and thanks to its long-lasting effect I can feel it and remember that it is working during the day. Obviously, if I will be exposed to stronger and more direct sunlight, this cream may not be enough, but for daily use, inside the house, for the natural and artificial light in which one lives, it is more than enough.

After watching the interview and trying just one product as suggested, I have become aware of taking care of this aspect of my life. It is true, I am not so regular with this, as there are some days when I forget to apply it, but I think it is important to take it up again and continue taking care of myself. There has been a lot of talk about the effect of blue light on our eyes, in fact, I was harmed by it and it motivated me to buy my glasses. So undoubtedly there must be an effect on the skin if we neglect it, and we don't want that. So I invite you to think about this issue, if you haven't already, and then make a decision, which doesn't necessarily have to be the same as mine, but at least take care of yourself in some way.

Si hace un par de años me hubieses dicho que usas protector solar para estar dentro de tu casa, sin salir, quizás hubiese pensado que también vas a la playa a pasar la pulidora en la arena. Pero ahora entiendo mejor el asunto desde que vi la entrevista de una dermatóloga hablando sobre éste tema. Al poco tiempo tomé acción y quiero contarte cómo me fue. Por favor, acompáñame.

No recuerdo el nombre del médico entrevistado, pero fue en una emisión de noticias al mediodía en vivo por un canal de televisión nacional. Allí ella recordaba que la piel del rostro está expuesta a mucha luz incluso dentro del hogar, tal como la luz del monitor de la computadora, de nuestros teléfonos celulares y de los bombillos y lámparas, bien sea fluorescentes o led. Todo esto tiene puede tener incidencia en piel de nuestro rostro, en vista que es regular (prácticamente todos los días) y sobre un tipo de piel que no es tan profunda como las de otras partes del cuerpo.

Su recomendación era usar a diario una crema humectante con filtro solar, el cual no sería necesario que fuera de dígitos altos. Eso me hizo pensar. Se lo comenté a mi esposa y ambos concordamos de que tenía mucho sentido todo lo que dijo la profesional. De hecho, la piel de mi rostro ya estaba adquiriendo un tono más enrojecido que el resto del cuerpo. ¿Casualidad? Así que en unos pocos días visitamos un lugar donde vendían diferentes productos de ésta clase.

Allí habían dos cremas hidratantes con filtro solar. Elegí ésta, marca ZOAH, con FPS 15, cuyo valor fue menor a los $5. Su envase dice que protege contra los rayos UVA y UVB. La otra no decía el FPS, así que la descarté. Luego de leer las instrucciones empecé a aplicármela en las mañanas.

Mi piel es blanca, con muchas huellas del famoso acné de adolescente y unos que otros golpes y heridas en la frente. Es una piel grasa, y creo que es lo que extrañé de ésta información en los productos que revisé, ya que sencillamente decían que servía para todo tipo de piel. Supongo que quizás lo que uno quiere es protegerse de la luz, y ya. Bueno...

La crema es blanca y su densidad es bastante espesa. De hecho, sucede que cuando estás aplicándola en el rostro con la ayuda de los dedos al poco tiempo puede empezar a hacer grumos blancos, así que no hay que demorarse mucho en distribuirla uniformemente sobre la piel. Eso sí, noté que con el paso de las semanas fue perdiendo esa densidad y se empezaba a poner más líquida, no sé si sea por el calor. Su olor es aceptable para mi, aunque no tanto para mi esposa, que suele tener un olfato más refinado. Cabe destacar que su envase no dice nada sobre ese detalle.

¿Cómo me ha ido? Poco a poco fui recobrando un tono menos "quemado", y aunque su envase dice que es anti-edad, eso no funciona, al menos conmigo. Quizás esté envejeciendo más rápido que el efecto de la crema. Igual, yo no la compré para ese propósito. Volviendo al tema de la protección, sí creo que me ayuda, y gracias a su efecto duradero puedo sentirla y recordar que está actuando durante el día. Obviamente, si seré expuesto a una luz del sol más fuerte y directa, ésta crema tal vez no sea suficiente, pero para lo diario, dentro de la casa, para la luz natural y artificial en la que uno se desenvuelve, es más que suficiente.

Luego de ver la entrevista y probar apenas un producto como lo han sugerido he tomado consciencia de cuidar éste aspecto en mi vida. Es verdad, no soy tan regular con esto, en vista que hay algunos días en los que olvido aplicármelo, pero creo que es importante retomarlo y seguirse cuidando. Se ha hablado mucho del efecto de la luz azul en nuestros ojos, de hecho, yo fui perjudicado con ella y me motivo a comprar mis lentes. Así que indudablemente debe haber un efecto sobre la piel si nos descuidamos, y no queremos eso. Así que te invito a pensar sobre éste asunto, si aún no lo has hecho, y luego tomar una decisión, que no necesariamente tiene que ser igual a la mía, pero al menos te cuides de alguna forma.
