The 31 Sentence Contest: Results for Round 3

The 31 Sentence Contest Winners.png

Over in China, the revered Shanghai Conservatory of Music can’t even believe the principles of jazz are real! That with enough courage and trust in yourself, you can hear a piece of music once, and ring dazzling changes on it forever and ever. They can’t duplicate our jazz. But everything else we make doesn’t worry them a bit.
....The road to wealth comes from understanding yourself. Doing what you do best, not what other people do best.
--John Taylor Gatto

Thanks to @carolkean for finding this quote. It will be going on the contest post from here on out.

We had five entries this round:
(1) @letalis-laetitia - Cagliari Calling
(2) @owasco - The Old Lady's Memory
(3) @odeis - The king's ear is not blocked but the cabinet behaviours make him appears as DEAF
(4) @blueeyes8960 - Memory Lane
(5) @chireerocks - Improving Memory

An honorable mention:

@carolkean - Miss Diode Wants a Real New Body; although it doesn't qualify for a story, of which she admits, her struggle with this exercise is what I'd like to draw attention to. Thanks for sharing.

I've only ever done this exercise as a freewrite, Madness. Usually what comes first is clustering to get my ideas out on paper and then I use the computer for everything else. For keeping track of the numbers, I've been using a Tarot deck - it's also how I come up with the random numbers. 8-)

I enjoy learning how other people put this exercise into practice.

If you haven't noticed, thesaurus.com has at the moment a free tool. It's pretty neat, I think.

One last thing before the announcement of the winners...

Thanks for all of the support around the @sbi community. After creating "Steem N' Roses", I got to see everyone's support, which was very touching. That support will help keep this contest running, should you enjoy this contest enough to come back for more whenever time permits that is.

It sucks to have someone like that downvoting us when we already are underpaid and going about peacefully in our ways. Quite a few people didn't even pay into the program and are still getting attacked simply because they have one.

In spite of that silly mess, thanks for continuing to post your work. I had a lot of fun reading everyone's entry.

We shall continue to strive forward.

Now, the judging. This is my least favorite part because that means I have to cut people down a little. I mean, I would give the top prize to everyone but that is not the way this contest works.

This is my first contest. I've only got to see what it was like from the perspective of a contestant and now I've gone a flipped the tables. This is hard work and helps to make me more humble when I have the thought of, "Why didn't they pick me!?!? I put x amount of ... . Oh my?!?!" hahaha

Enough with the chitty-chat. Let's get the suspense over with.

First Place

@owasco - The Old Lady's Memory

Second Place

@blueeyes8960 - Memory Lane

Third Place

@chireerocks - Improving Memory

Round 4 is out. Come stop by if time permits.

I'm honored that you even mentioned my paltry effort (and I did rework it into a more "finished" story, btw, after hours!). And you have yourself to thank for the Gatto quote -- I googled him only because of you.
As for the downvote, I haven't followed any of the politics, but I'll do anything I can to counteract that silly gesture of contempt. You don't deserve that, nor do all who join you in your creative challenges!

Congratulations, @owasco,

on a well-deserved win!
I love the way you used memory in your story, @blueeyes8960,
and now, off to read after a day spent writing without following the rules and posting past deadline and feeling a wee bit silly but not daunted. #NeverDaunted!

@tristancarax - I know exactly what you're talking about - the work and struggle in judging contest entries. I ran a couple of flash fiction contests on Narrative and it is a lot of work and you want to just pick everyone for the prizes but you can't. I love the contest and I'll be giving it another whirl!
Congrats @owasco and @chireerocks.

Congrats to you too, blueeyes! I love your story. My dust vote, sadly, doesn't allow me to show how much. I do need to get @tipu working (before Hardfork, I was frequently transferring funds for that purpose).

I've hosted and judged contests too, and it really is a time commitment and a challenge to narrow it down to #1. One of these days I might try it again. Last contest, only one writer entered, but that was how I met @sarez, and that was a prize in and of itself!

The good fortune was entirely mine @carolkean . I learned from the story and the comments you made (and make here and at Goodreads). And most of all I enjoyed it.
